The neighborhood drains through two corridors
Here is the constraint that defines every pickup out here. West Lake Hills really only has two ways out, Loop 360 (the Capital of Texas Highway) and Bee Cave Road, and both dump onto MoPac before anything reaches downtown. There is no clever residential cut-through that bails you out when one clogs. Loop 360 runs three lanes each way from MoPac toward US 290, then pinches to two lanes west of MoPac, and that lane drop backs traffic up well beyond rush hour. The other dependable snag is eastbound Bee Cave Road at Las Cimas Parkway, by the Village at Westlake medical complex. Anyone living here knows that signal. You can lose close to five minutes sitting through one cycle of it.
The downtown commute and the AUS airport run
On open roads, downtown is 20 to 30 minutes from most of 78746. On a sour afternoon it stretches to 30 to 50. The airport rewrites the math again. Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) sits southeast of the city, and from West Lake Hills you are looking at roughly 35 to 45 minutes when things move. The route almost always runs Loop 360 or Bee Cave Road to MoPac, south to Ben White (US 290 East), then east to the terminal. No toll road shortens it. SH 130 sweeps the far east edge of the metro and does nothing for a westside pickup. A 6 a.m. departure flies on empty roads. An afternoon flight threads the same evening congestion that strangles the commute, so we build extra time into the pickup. The construction nobody warns you about
This is the one that trips people up. TxDOT's underpass build at Westlake Drive and Cedar Street has been rebuilding both crossings in phases, so any directions that say turn at Westlake Drive can be flat wrong on a given week. Whichever crossover is shut that month, the move is a push up to the next open crossing and a U-turn back down. There is also active work along 360 near Courtyard out toward RM 2222, with lanes shifting on the northern stretch up by the Pennybacker Bridge. We keep current on these closures, so the route we actually drive is the one open that morning, not the one a map drew a year ago.
